What happens during a consultation?

Herbal Medicine treats the whole person, not just the eczema or other presenting symptoms. In this way we hope to discover the underlying cause for a skin complaint or other presenting condition. We may find that certain body systems such as circulation or eliminatory routes may not be working as efficiently as they could and that may well be contributing to the complaint. Each person is individual and unique in terms of how  their body functions, and therefore a thorough knowledge of the whole person is necessary to treat accurately. An extensive medical history is always taken and diet and lifestyle factors discussed.

Current blood pressure is usually checked, along with other basic clinical examinations where appropriate.

The initial consultation usually lasts approximately an hour and a half.

The first follow-up will usually be two weeks later and last nearer three quarters of an hour.

After this follow up consultations will usually be a month apart. This may vary depending upon the needs of the individual & the condition in question.

Herbal medicine is often most effective when taken over a period of time, especially in chronic, long term illnesses. It is usually impossible to predict how long treatment will last in most cases, as individual response can vary.

As the medicine begins to take effect and healing starts to take place,  the bodies needs change.  This is reflected in the fact that the medicines change over time, to support those healing changes.

Usually Herbal Medicines are dispensed as liquid alcohol tinctures.

Some dried herbs may be used as well as creams, juices, syrups and tablets.

Each prescription is made to suit the individual. Most herbalists run their own dispensaries.
